ABOUT MILL

Learning to communicate in another language is a vital part of cross-cultural ministry. Yet many people go to the field without adequate preparation for learning a new language.

Being equipped with tools to help in the task of language learning can reduce some of the stress of living and ministering in a cross-cultural environment.

MILL is an 8 day pre-departure program designed to help people develop the skills, methods, techniques and attitudes necessary to learn another language. Gain a fresh perspective on language learning, while acquiring skills, confidence, flexibility and a boost to beginning language learning.

The most effective language for reaching the hearts of a people group is their language, not ours. Yet many people are intimidated by the thought of learning a new language well enough to communicate at a heart level. Those who struggled with language at school, or have never attempted to communicate in a different language may feel overwhelmed by the task.

We all have different learning styles and preferences, which can affect our language learning situation. Some people assume that language school on the field will provide all they need, while others think they can 'pick it up' as they go, or learn from a book or a computer.

Ministering to people of another culture and language is all about building relationships. A key to building effective and strong relationships is being able to communicate in the heart language of the people. Consequently, language learning is all about relationships - it is not simply a barrier to be overcome before 'real' ministry can begin.

In their influential article "Language learning is communication - is ministry!" Brewster and Brewster (1984) point out that "Millions of people have studied a language without learning it, yet billions have learned languages without studying them ... Normal language acquisition is a social activity, not an academic activity."*

These concepts undergird the approach taken at MILL, where the focus is on developing practical tools and building positive attitudes to assist with the task of language learning for ministry contexts.

MILL students are usually Christians preparing to work cross-culturally who will need to learn to communicate in another language on their field of service. They may be involved with a missions agency, working in a tent-making ministry, or just considering the possibilities of cross-cultural service.

MILL includes a personalised approach which involves consultation regarding your specific situation – considering factors such as your learning style, target language, ministry role, family situation, living situation, and we’ll work with you on some of the challenges you will specifically face in your unique situation. While many of the principles hold for any situation, some things will be different depending on you and where you are.
